Who We Are · 我们是谁

Australian Nushu Culture and Research Association (ANCRA)

ANCRA is the first non-governmental organisation outside China dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Nüshu culture. Our mission is to carry this precious heritage of Chinese women's culture beyond its local roots and into a wider cross-cultural context, sustaining it as a living tradition.

Through cultural salons, art exhibitions, workshops and more, we want to create a space where people across genders and borders can discover Nüshu, learn it, and fall in love with it.

Nüshu belongs to the past, and to the present. It gives voice to those who were once overlooked, and invites a new generation to write their own language, through cultural inheritance and creation.

A Legacy of Sisterhood

Nüshu is a women's script unique to Jiangyong in Hunan, carrying a millennium of women's emotion and community life.

Written in the Margins

In an era when women were denied formal education, Nüshu was passed between sworn sisters — a way to record poetry, autobiography and words of consolation.

A Living Tradition

Nüshu is not only read and written; it is learned and transmitted through song, memory and embodied practice — a living vocal heritage.

Carried Onto New Soil

Today we hope to carry this heritage beyond the boundaries of language, geography and time, so it continues to be written, understood and shared on new soil.
